Levels of German Language
The German language training course levels correspond with the Proficiency Levels outlined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).
- The beginners level consist of three modules (A1, A2 and B1).
- After the beginner’s level follows the intermediate level, which also consists of two modules (B2 and C1).
- Finally, the advanced level (Oberstufe) has one module (C2).
This is the preliminary level learning very basic phrases and building grammer skills. You increase our vocabulary and learn to introduce yourself and others. The other language functions in this level enable you to ask and give information about personal details i.e. where you live, people you know, and things you have. You learn about giving directions, define shapes, sizes, colors, buying at stores, etc. You learn how to make simple enquiries in speaking and writing. You can interact in a simple way, provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
You can undergo certification “ÖSD Zertifikat A1”.
This level gears up the student to understand simple text sentences and frequently used expressions related to everyday situations (e.g. personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
Since you gain some knowledge in German, you can express and communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a basic and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. You can describe aspects of your background, immediate environment, and needs in simple terms. You can discuss on simple political aspects i.e. population, news, radio programs etc.
You have gained the knowledge on Perfect tense, Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Adjective declension, Subordinate Clauses, direct and indirect Subordinate Clauses, Prepositions. You can undergo certification “ÖSD Zertifikat A2”.
After completing this level, you will have basic command on the fundamentals of German grammar and be in position to participate in various discussions. Knowledge of the clear standard language will provide confidence to express on familiar matters, regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. You can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
You can participate in simple discussions using simple, connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. You can understand and describe experiences and events, hopes and ambitions, and briefly give reasons and opinions on press articles on topics like travel & tourism, employment and the working world, school, education, history, politics & culture, literature.
You gear up with basic command of the essentials of German grammar, in particular all tense forms, Present and Imperfect Subjunctive, Passive, Adjective declension, Subordinate Clauses & sentence structure. You are ready for the Zertifikat Deutsch (ZD) exam.
Upon completion of this level, the student should learn to express fluently about a variety of moderately difficult topics and without preparation. You learn to express your opinion, to state your views, to discuss, analyse and interpret simpler texts, to summarize them and give an account of them. You can write a clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
The basic grammatical structures are revised again and consolidated on an intermediate level, all tense forms, all applications of the Present and Imperfect Subjunctive, Subordination, Participle Constructions, Prepositions. By the end of this level, you can understand the main ideas of complex texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialization. You are ready for the Zertifikat Deutsch für den Beruf (ZD Beruf) exam, and for strong learners, the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung (ZMP).
Completing this level means you possess good command on German. You can express verbally and in writing a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognize implicit meaning. You can express yourself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. You can understand prose and poetry and their interpretations. You can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic, and professional purposes. You are prepared to appear for the Zentrale Mittelstufenprüfung (ZMP).
Reaching the end of this level you have shown that you can easily understand virtually everything heard or read. You can summarise information from different Spoken and written sources; and reconstruct arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. You work on literary, socio-political , cultural and scientific topics. You can express yourself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in more complex situations. You are prepared for “ÖSD Zertifikat C2 / Wirtschaftssprache Deutsch (university entrance exam)”.
